A Little About A Lot

“In Groups and Out Groups: Scapegoating and the Rise of Polarization”

September 8 at 7:00 p.m. online

On Sept. 8, the Center will launch a new series called “A Little About A Lot.” Like the Center’s long-running Reel Spirit Movie Project, this new series will involve the community in monthly discussions around topics of social, religious, and spiritual interest. Rather than using feature-length films as the “foggy mirror” into our souls, A Little About A Lot will bring shorter formats like podcasts, web logs, and short books and videos, curated from around the digital world.
A Little About A Lot begins Thursday, Sept. 8 at 7:00 p.m., and will continue on the 2nd Thursday of each month thereafter. The Center will lead and host the 2-hour discussion online through Zoom. The series is spearheaded by CSW Associate Terry Decker and Brandon Cook, Executive Director of Naming the Real. The series will target different facilitators and topics each month. For September 8, Brandon will facilitate “In Groups and Out Groups: Scapegoating and the Rise of Polarization”.

The Center will lead and host the 2-hour discussion electronically through Zoom. Participants are asked to read/watch the following selection of articles, videos, and podcasts prior to the discussion on September 8 (approximately 50 minutes in total):

  1. Article: Primer: Political Polarization in the USA (6 mins)
  2. Video: Rene Girard: Mimetic Desire (2 mins)
  3. Video: Rene Girard: An Introduction (13 mins)
  4. Podcast: The Rise of Scapegoating (24 mins)
  5. Article: David Brooks: The Entrenchment Election (4 mins)

There is no fee for this event. However, donations to Center for Spiritual Wisdom, a non-profit 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt organization, will be gratefully accepted. A suggested donation of $5 or more per discussion will help us continue to offer this and similar events.

Registrations will be received on a first-come, first-served basis and you can choose to make a donation via Eventbrite. After registration, participants will receive a discussion guide that focuses on key themes, and a dedicated link to join the online discussion.
