The Crisis of the American University: When the Quest for Justice Displaces the Quest for Truth

A Little About A Lot Monthly Series

Online Dec. 8 at 7:00 p.m. – free of charge!

On Thursday, December 8 at 7:00 p.m. Eastern, the Center will host another installment of its monthly discussion series called A Little About A Lot. The series engages the community in discussions around topics of social, religious, and spiritual interest. A Little About A Lot uses short formats like podcasts, web posts, short books, and videos curated from around the digital world.

The December discussion is “The Crisis of the American University: When the Quest for Justice Displaces the Quest for Truth.” During the discussion, we will explore the thoughts of social scientists Jonathan Haidt, Bradley Campbell, and Jason Manning concerning what they consider a “crisis” in higher education. Specifically, we will explore how the rise of “victimhood culture” and it impact on the meaning and purpose of the university. These scholars recommend what can be done to restore the vigor not only of higher education, but of American discourse in general. The discussion will be facilitated by Center Associate Brandon Cook, Executive Director of Naming the Real.

The 2-hour discussions are held virtually via Zoom and are led and hosted by Center for Spiritual Wisdom. Participants are asked to consume the following selection of materials prior to the discussion on December 8 (approximately one hour 30 minutes in total, or two hours with the optional article):

  1. Summary Article: The Righteous Mind – Where microaggressions really come from: A sociological account (20 mins)
  2. Video: “Two Incompatible Sacred Values in American Universities” by Jonathan Haidt (1 hr 6 mins)
  3. Optional Original Academic Article: “Microaggression and Moral Cultures” by Bradley Campbell and Jason Manning (30 mins)

There is no fee for this event. However, donations to Center for Spiritual Wisdom, a non-profit 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt organization, will be gratefully accepted. A suggested donation of $5 or more per discussion will help us continue to offer this and similar events.
