The Spirituality of Gen Z (According to Gen Z)
A Little About A Lot Monthly Series
Online Feb. 9 at 7:00 p.m. – no charge
On Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7:00 p.m. Eastern, the Center will host another installment in its monthly discussion series A Little About A Lot. This month’s topic is The Spirituality of Gen Z (According to Gen Z). For this online gathering, we welcome students from Brevard College to be our guest instructors. The facilitator will be Rob Field, Director of Center for Spiritual Wisdom, who was also the students’ professor for a World Religions course he taught for many years at the college.
Gen Z is the generation of Americans born between the years 1997 and 2012, making them somewhere between 10 and 25 years old today. During our discussion, students from this demographic will tell us in their own words what religion and spirituality mean to them. They will tell us about their religious / spiritual upbringing and if their viewpoint and behavior has changed since graduating from high school. The students will describe the words and phrases that best capture their religious or spiritual identity, and also whether being connected to an organized religion is important to them.
After we hear from these Brevard College students, we will have an opportunity to respond and ask questions, leading to what we hope will be an enlightening discussion. Due to the topic under discussion, we hope attendees will invite young people in the Gen Z demographic as well as the parents and other family members of “Zoomers” (as Gen Z has been nicknamed). A similar event held in January at a local faith community, with the same students participating, led to an engrossing exchange between the panelists and members of the faith community (see photo below).

The 2-hour discussions are held virtually via Zoom and are led and hosted by Center for Spiritual Wisdom. Participants are asked to engage the following selection of materials prior to the discussion on Feb. 9 (approximately 20 minutes in total):
- Article: Generation Z and the Future of Faith in America (10 minutes)
- Article: Western N.C. Feature Story on Gen Z & Religion / Spirituality (6 minutes)
- Video: CNBC News Feature: Decline in Americans’ Particip. In Organized Religion (4 minutes)
There is no fee to attend this event. However, donations to Center for Spiritual Wisdom, a non-profit 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt organization, will be gratefully accepted. A suggested donation of $5 or more per discussion will help us continue to offer this and similar events.
