The Center for Spiritual Wisdom’s monthly “Reel Spirit Movie Project” is up and running! The third Thursday evening of every month we will gather to discuss films that are intended to spark meaningful discourse around the religious, social, spiritual, and/or mystical dimensions of our human experience. Each month we will select a different film, and you are welcome to join any or all of these discussions.
On Thursday, September 17, 2020 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm the Center will discuss the second film in our series—The Truman Show (1998), a comedy/drama/science fiction film starring Jim Carrey, Ed Harris, and Laura Linney, and directed by Peter Weir. This movie is an allegory dealing with timeless questions and dilemmas: Is each of us alone? Who is really in control? What or who pulls our strings? Can we break the illusion? If so, what will it take to do so? Join us for a discussion of the life and decisions of Truman Burbank and how these might relate to our own lives (you can find a fuller synopsis on IMDB here).
The format of these film discussions is both evocative and engaging. The facilitator for each event creates a Discussion Guide that focuses on key themes for the film, and we send this guide to all registrants. Since we are still practicing social distancing due to COVID-19, participants will begin by viewing the selected film on their own. We will then follow with a scheduled 2-hour facilitated discussion, which the Center will lead and host electronically through Zoom.
The facilitator for this month’s movie discussion is Jean Woods, an Associate at the Center who has a background in mathematics, Pastoral Studies, and Spiritual Direction, and who leads and facilitates programs about spiritual growth and transformation. There is no charge for this event, but participants are asked to please consider a donation to Center for Spiritual Wisdom.
To register or receive additional information, email Cindy Decker at communications@centersw.org. Registrations will be received on a first-come, first-served basis. To make a donation to the Center, go to https://centersw.org/donate. Also, stay tuned for other movies planned by the Reel Spirit Movie Project, including the documentary John Lewis: Good Trouble.
