On Thursday, Feb. 18 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Eastern, the Center will discuss the next film in its monthly “Reel Spirit Movie Project” (RSMP) series — Signs (2002), starring Mel Gibson, Jaoquin Phoenix, Rory Culkin and Abigail Breslin. M. Night Shyamalan both wrote and directed this mystery/sci-fi favorite.
From IMDb: “Preacher Graham Hess loses his faith in God after his wife dies in a brutal car accident. He lives with his children and brother in a farmhouse. Crop circles start to appear in their cornfields; Graham dismisses them as mischief by miscreants. After hearing strange noises and watching news coverage on crop circles appearing all over the world, the family grows suspicious of alien activities. Now they must stick together as a family and believe, to survive and escape the ordeal.”
Signs is a movie that is not really about crop circles and aliens. It is about fear, doubt, family, and faith. Join us for a discussion about how the central character of the film, Graham Hess, played by Mel Gibson, deals with his journey to reconcile his past with his present. Cindy Decker will lead the discussion of this rich and intriguing film.

The format of these film discussions has been well-received by participants, who are encouraged to pursue free and open expression. The organizers of this monthly series strive to create an informal and fun atmosphere, one that’s safe for all to share their views without fear of judgment. The facilitator creates a discussion guide that focuses on key themes for the film, and the guide is sent to all registrants. Participants view the selected film ahead of time on their own. A 2-hour facilitated discussion follows on the appointed evening, hosted online via Zoom.
The facilitator for Signs is Cindy Decker, Operations and Communications Manager at the Center. Cindy has a background in counseling, training, and team building, and loves a good mystery! Cindy is a founding member of the Reel Spirit Movie Project and is delighted to be facilitating her first film discussion with Signs.
There is no charge for this event, but participants are asked to consider a donation to Center for Spiritual Wisdom, a non-profit organization.
