Self-Discovery Through Nature Contact

A virtual expressive writing workshop

conducted by Paula Hartman-Stein, Ph.D.

Sunday, Oct. 3 from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Spend an autumn afternoon at a unique online writing workshop for personal discovery, enhanced well-being, and a deeper sense of spirituality by connecting with nature. The emphasis will be on insights gained from the writing process while observing an aspect of nature. No prior writing experience is needed. Adults of all ages are welcome!

This workshop will be led by Dr. Paula Hartman-Stein and will take place online via Zoom on Sunday, October 3 from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. The cost is $40 per person. Registrations are now being accepted HERE.

Paula Hartman-Stein, Ph.D. has led intergenerational writing workshops for professionals and the lay public across the country and in Australia. Among her professional publications she wrote the chapter, “Creative Writing Groups: A promising avenue for enhancing working memory & emotional well-being”, and a poem, “The Handkerchief,” about grief over her father’s death in the on-line poetry journal, Soul-Lit.

She will lead this virtual workshop to connect you deeply with nature through thoughtful writing prompts. You will learn research evidence of the “power of the pen” to enhance physical, psychological, and spiritual well-being. To set the stage, Dr. Paula will feature examples of inspirational writings from famous authors such as Mary Oliver, as well as writers from past workshops.

Participants in this program will write two short pieces. One will be from memory of a nature experience that produced a sense of awe. The second will be from carefully observing a natural object in their yard, a house plant, or nature artwork in their home as a prompt to create an insightful narrative which can be a few lines, a poem, or a story. Afterwards, participants who are willing to do so will be invited to share their pieces with the virtual group, which is often the most powerful part of the writing experience.

Paula Hartman-Stein is a public speaker, workshop leader, and nationally recognized psychologist specializing in aging. She is the founding director of Center for Healthy Aging in Kent, Ohio. In 2020 Dr. Paula, her husband, and adult son moved permanently from Northeast Ohio to Western NC, drawn to the beauty and awe they felt from nature in this area.
