Contemplation On the Cooper: Journey to Mepkin Abbey

Monastic Spirituality Learning Series + Retreat

September-October 2022

Center for Spiritual Wisdom and Mepkin Abbey invite you to discover the renewed wisdom of an ancient tradition. Join us this fall for a 3-session learning series culminating in a weekend retreat at the beautiful Mepkin Abbey on the Cooper River in South Carolina. Immerse yourself in the spirituality that monks and nuns have practiced for many hundreds of years.

Mepkin Abbey is a Trappist monastery located north of Charleston, S.C., established in 1949 on the site of the historic Mepkin Plantation. The monks at Mepkin Abbey draw on a Christian monastic lineage dating from the 4th century. Following the Rule of St. Benedict, they devote their lives to contemplative prayer, spiritual study, work, hospitality, simplicity, silence, and community.

While on this journey to Mepkin, we will study the spiritual practices still followed by present-day monastics, and discover how these practices can inform and enhance our own spirituality. CSW will host three weekly online sessions that break open monastic spirituality and how such spirituality fosters spiritual awareness and presence. Following the online sessions, the journey will continue to Mepkin Abbey for a weekend retreat. At Mepkin, we will join the monks in prayer, delve further into their contemplative practices, bathe in the beauty of the abbey grounds, and spend time in personal reflection and prayer, as well as engage in community discussion. We hope the journey will be transformative and on-going for all who take part.

The 90-minute weekly online sessions will be held on Sept. 26, Oct. 3, and Oct. 10 (all Mondays). The online sessions will be held from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Eastern on Zoom. The retreat will begin on Friday, Oct. 14 at 4:00 pm and will end Sunday evening, Oct. 16. Check out will be the following morning, Oct. 17. Registration will include all study materials, overnight accommodations, and meals at Mepkin Abbey (transportation to and from Mepkin Abbey not included).

NOTE: this series is open to women as well as men, and is recommended for Christians and individuals who are open to the wisdom of Christian spirituality from its monastic heritage.

Registration opens June 1st
