Contemplative Photography for Advent
A Six-Week Online Learning Series
Starting Tuesday, November 9, 2021
2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Starting in November, Center for Spiritual Wisdom will offer a 6-week online learning series in Contemplative Photography with a focus on the season of Advent. The series will be held on Tuesdays from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., November 9 through December 14 using Zoom video conferencing. The final class in the series will be held after Christmas, the exact date to be decided by the class attendees. Registrations, at a cost of $149 per person (which translates to $25 per 2-hour session), are now being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Reduced-price registrations ($79) are also available for full-time students between the ages of 15 to 25.
Over the 6 sessions participants will experience Presence in the world through the lens of the camera. This series is not about learning photography, or how to use a camera, but instead about “seeing” with one’s full being, forgetting the egoic self, and opening to the surrounding world.

Jean Woods, CSW Associate, will lead the series. Classes will begin a few weeks before Advent to connect and go over the basics of the course. The series will center around the season of Advent and Advent-related themes. Advent is a period of spiritual preparation from the Christian tradition, marked by a focus on prayer, fasting, and repentance. This is followed by a time of anticipation, hope, and joy.
Each week participants will be asked to select and share three photos from the ones they captured for the weekly theme. They will then offer what the image is about and what it said to them. The other class participants will be invited to respectively share what they see in the photos in a supportive and productive manner. During the final class, on a date to be determined by the group, participants will review photos from the last week of Advent.
Participants must already have and be familiar with their own cameras. Smartphone cameras are welcome, but if you have one, a standalone digital camera is recommended, as the opportunity for quality, engagement, and contemplation can be greater.
Participants will benefit from concise reading material, audio-visual supplements, live presentations, and group interactions. To facilitate a nurturing community, participation will be limited to the first 6 people to register.
