Reel Spirit Movie Project
December Film Discussion
On Thursday, Dec. 16th, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Eastern, CSW’s Reel Spirit Movie Project will discuss About Time (2013), the next film in our ongoing monthly series. Featuring Domhnall Gleeson, Rachel McAdams, and Bill Nighy, About Time was written and directed by Richard Curtis, the creator of Love Actually, Notting Hill and Four Weddings. About Time is a comedy about Tim Lake (Domhnall Gleeson) who discovers from his father (Bill Nighy) that the men in his family have always had the ability to travel through time. Tim, after a lot of cunning time travelling wins the heart of beautiful but insecure Mary (Rachel McAdams). Tim uses his power to create the perfect romantic proposal, to save his wedding from the worst best-man speeches, to save his best friend from professional disaster, and to get his pregnant wife to the hospital in time for the birth of their daughter, despite a nasty traffic jam outside Abbey Road.
While not a Christmas film, this film is delightful to view and discuss during the holiday season. Going deeper into the film, the ability to travel back in time is a metaphor for all of our lives—inviting us to reflect back at our decisions and relationships that changed our lives. About Time will warm the cockles of your heart and bid you to recall loving memories of your family and friends during this holiday season. As Tim notes in the film, his life was “always going to be about love.” Being about love is what makes About Time so special, a text-book selection for the Real Spirit Movie Project.
Tony Gillman, chair of the Reel Spirit Movie Project and frequent participant in these film discussions, will be the facilitator for the discussion of About Time.
There is no charge for this event, but participants are asked to consider a donation to Center for Spiritual Wisdom, a non-profit organization. To make a donation, please go HERE to the CSW website. To register for this event or to receive additional information, please email Cindy Decker at firstname.lastname@example.org. Registrations will be received on a first-come, first-served basis. After registration, participants will receive information about the film and a dedicated link to join the discussion.
The format for discussing films on the Reel Spirit Movie Project is both evocative and engaging. The facilitator for the discussion creates a guide that focuses on key themes in the film, and we send this guide to all registrants. Participants begin by watching the film on their own. We follow with a scheduled 2-hour online facilitated discussion that the Center leads and hosts through Zoom.
Stay tuned for other movie discussions planned by the Reel Spirit Movie Project, including The Father, our January selection.
